Intriguing and Stunning: Portrait Photography By Vyacheslav Ivanov

My name is Vyacheslav Ivanov and I am photographer living and working in Moscow, Russia. I was born in the countryside USSR and it sometimes feels odd being born in a country that no longer exists 🙂

Back then we had little entertainment, no internet and video games. When I was 10 years old, my parents took me to the photography club instead. I immediately felt excited about this field and soon got my first camera. My first camera was a Smena 8M. This is a very simple but very reliable camera. There are almost no settings, and I did almost everything by guesswork.

By the way, after all these years, that camera still works and I sometimes take pictures with it. The results are pretty funny-looking though. So long story short, photography has been a passion of mine since young age.

I enjoy shooting in abandoned places or in natural locations much more than in any studio. These places are not artificial, they are all real. Each has its own history, its own atmosphere. Each of them continues to live its own life.

I love natural light, even if it’s not enough for taking the ideal photograph.

This echoes very well with my main photography series “the thought of solitude”, in which I try to reflect how we move away from environment and from each other. I try to analyze a person and her place in a social environment. Her life in a consumer society. Whether in urban landscapes or in natural landscapes, we still often remain alone. But I would not say that this is so bad. This is the way it is.

I love natural light, even if it’s not enough for taking the ideal photograph. I think this is important. It gives credibility to the moment. Even if I shoot at night, I try to use only the lighting that is on the street: the light of the moon, street lights, neon signs and all those good stuff.
